PICAXE Microcontroller Course Location: Technology Centre, DeLaSalle College , Malvern Mission: Introduce to teachers the microcontroller device, its programming, its applications and expansion options, assistance with teaching strategies and assessment.
Lesson plans and teacher notes will be supplied to start the teachers in this important area Course will be conducted by two teachers and a curriculum/electronics designer with the aim of developing teacher skills in teaching microcontrollers and their applications. Demonstration and teaching boards will be manufactured during the course of the course and these will be given to teachers.
Day 1 Introduction to electronic devices Introduction to electronic applications and the idea of a program or sequential processes Logic, representation of numbers Program planning Introduction to BASIC and flowchart concepts What is a microcontroller and introduction to the PICAXE family Hands on – Using the tutorial board - outputs Hands on – Using the tutorial board inputs Hand on – Using the debug statement Hands on – Documentation and assessment ideas Hands on -Serial output
Day 2 Hands on – reading and understanding circuit schematics and drawing your own Using PCB Wizard Guide to designing your own boards – example based on designing your own roving line following buggy – lesson plans supplied Hands on – Expansion of control inputs and outputs with I2C, serial based commands Hands on – expansion to read ultrasonic distance, compass, led arrays Discussion of lesson plans and learning outcomes Starting off students – Hardware discussion on tutorial boards, cyberpet, alarm, dice kits Hands on- Designing your own circuits with PCB Wizard Hands on – Designing with PCB Design and Make Hands on - Make your own circuits with Roland mills by engraving, Examples of student work Teachers will use the following resources
Picaxe 18 Tutorial starter pack – This starter pack remains with the teacher Picaxe 08M chip – This remains with the teacher Cyperbet, Dice or Alarm project board – this will be assembled and tested by the teachers Self designed PICAXE -08M with expansion. Special edition of PCB Design and Make that enables the teacher to design boards and send them to Intellecta for manufacture.
